Our story so far...

Our founders, Sean and Ellen Fitzpatrick, have over 40 years of extensive experience working with children and young people in a wide variety of settings including youth work, juvenile justice and residential child care.

Sean and Ellen started Care Today (the sister organisation of Parallel Parents) in 1991 as a residential children's homes provider. Through their work in residential homes they identified that the majority of children are likely to make better developmental progress in a family environment. So, in response to requests for foster placements from Local Authorities, they decided to branch into fostering.

The first foster carers that Sean and Ellen recruited in 1994 brought about the creation of Parallel Parents, which started as a 'not for profit' family-run fostering service. The agency remains a family-owned and run fostering service, and the experiences of the founders have created a strong child-centred and innovative ethos.

Our  Registered Manager, Sinead Lewis, has been central to the development of Parallel Parents over the last 25 years. Having recruited and supported its very first fostering families, she has been in her current post since 2004, and heads a growing team of experienced Social Workers who do things 'the PP way.' We have high staff retention rates due to our support, family/community-centred approach and focus on equality and diversity.

Over time, the company has expanded to cover a wide geographical area. From the original two carers in Bolton (who still foster for the agency!), Parallel Parents now have dedicated social workers and foster carers all over Greater Manchester, Merseyside, Lancashire,  Yorkshire, Staffordshire, the East Midlands, the West Midlands and Worcestershire. We are continually looking to develop and expand our agency, and hope to continue our innovative and "Outstanding" fostering service.

Having spent most of his childhood growing up in foster care, Sam knew just how big an impact foster carers have in a child's life. And now he's decided to do something to help children like himself by becoming a foster carer!

After the breakdown of his family when he was just seven, Sam was separated from his older brothers and sister. He stayed with numerous foster families and went into residential care for a while, but settled with a foster carer called Janet who really helped to change his life.
