Reggie came to Care Today when he was just 8 years old. He had never been in a children’s home before and was anxious about moving away from his family. Before moving, life at home was very volatile so he struggled to settle with the new rules and routines and was often aggressive to the staff in the home. Regie also struggled at school and got into trouble with his behaviour, even trying to run away numerous times.
Moving into a children’s home is distressing for any child, regardless of whether or not they have been in care beforehand. The staff at Reggie’s home persisted with him and helped him to settle. With time, Reggie realised they were on his side and enjoyed being taken on trips out with them. Staff encouraged him to get involved in sports and so he joined the local football team which he loved.
Because he was settled at home, Reggie’s behaviour and relationships at school also improved. He started to engage with his teachers in class and enjoyed having friends round after school for dinner. After 18 months Care Today set up a bridging placement for Regie with one of our experienced foster carers, so he had a gradual transition to a foster family where he thrived.
