From Little Helper to Role Model: KM’s Lifelong Journey as a Foster Sister

Children of Foster Carers’ Week is an opportunity to honor the sons and daughters who grow up in fostering households. While parents make the decision to open their doors, it is often the children in the home who build the daily bridges of trust, safety, and joy.
KM’s story is a shining example of how growing up in a fostering family can shape an exceptional young woman.
Growing up in a fostering household
K has been part of a fostering family for as long as she can remember. When she was younger, her parents cared for babies and toddlers who stayed temporarily before transitioning to their adoptive forever families.
In 2017, her family shifted their focus toward long-term care. Then, in 2018, they welcomed a sibling group into their home, a group that remains with them to this day. Throughout every phase and transition, K has remained at the heart of her family’s fostering journey.
Empathy and Insight Beyond Her Years
Today, the young people in her home view K entirely as their older sister. One of the siblings struggles with sensory processing, emotional regulation, and managing challenging behaviors. Where others might see frustration, K shows zero judgment.
Her deep empathy allows her to connect with what he is experiencing in difficult moments:
Peer-to-Peer Support: K uses gentle encouragement to guide him through overwhelming situations, helping him process his feelings.
A Bridge for Her Parents: She offers her parents invaluable insights into what he might be going through, giving them fresh perspectives that help the whole family provide the best care possible.
Pageants, Pride, and Building Confidence
K brings fun, creativity, and energy to her role as a big sister. Recognising potential in the young girl in their home, K encouraged her to explore a passion for pageants.
Together, they spent hours designing and making outfits, practicing routines, and doing hair and makeup. K’s constant belief gave her foster sister the courage to stand tall and be bold! Her sister then picked up an extraordinary national win at a recent UK pageant!
K’s pride in her sister’s success is boundless, and she continually pushes her to reach for her dreams.
An Extraordinary Impact
K is a kind-hearted, creative, and deeply intuitive young woman whose presence elevates her entire household. The bond she shares with her foster siblings is a joy to observe, proving that the love of a big sister knows no boundaries.
To K: Thank you! Your parents, your foster siblings, and our entire community are so proud of the role model you have become.
